The term “NewSpace Economy” refers to the recent commercialization of space activities and most notably of spaceflight. In general, the term describes the global trend of private initiatives to develop space technologies, ideas, systems, architectures, programs, policies and missions motivated by peaceful, commercial and socio-economic nature, but certainly not of a political or military nature.
Traditionally, state governments have had a monopoly on space activity. However, the need for private sector involvement in maintaining and enhancing the human presence in space is evident.

The National Space Society (NSS) is an American international nonprofit educational and scientific organization specializing in space advocacy. The society’s vision is: “People living and working in thriving communities beyond the Earth, and the use of the vast resources of space for the dramatic betterment of humanity.” The society supports human spaceflight and robotic spaceflight, by both the public (e.g. NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, etc.) and private sector (e.g., SpaceX, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, etc.) organizations.

Greek NewSpace Society, is dedicated to the research, the cultivation of knowledge and learning, as well as the promotion of technologies in the field of NewSpace. Greek NewSpace Society aims to create educational and professional opportunities in the area of NewSpace Economy in Greece. Today, GrNSS’s volunteering members, coming from different educational and professional backgrounds, yet with a common vision and goal; to awaken the flame of NewSpace in Greece.

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens across the globe to use NASA’s open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space. Since 2018, Greek NewSpace Society organizes and runs the NASA Space Apps Challenge of Pereaus and Thessaloniki. Teams of technologists, scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, artists, and others collaborate to answer some of the most pressing challenges on Earth and in space by working with NASA’s open source data in 48 hours.

Greek NewSpace Society is a non-profit organization. All the members of the organization are volunteers.
