Our Story, Values & Vision

IMG_4209

The Greek NewSpace Society (GrNSS), the Greek chapter of the National Space Society (NSS), is a non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of the NewSpace Economy. Our goal is to promote technological and academic development in this rapidly evolving sector.

The flame for the organization’s founding ignited in 2018, following the first NASA Space Apps Larissa. There, a shared passion for space and a desire to create led five individuals to envision ways to continue this journey. Thus, GrNSS was born, with the aim of creating educational and professional opportunities in Greece around the NewSpace Economy. Today, GrNSS consists of a dynamic community of volunteers with diverse academic and professional backgrounds. We are proud to have created an environment where each member contributes equally, while developing professional skills and implementing innovative initiatives that enhance our organization’s presence.

The primary purpose of GrNSS is the research, cultivation of knowledge and its dissemination methods, as well as the cognitive and academic promotion of technologies in the NewSpace sector in Greece.

What is NewSpace?

The term "NewSpace Economy" refers to the recent commercial development of space activities, with private space flights being the most characteristic example. More specifically, the term describes the global trend of private companies developing space technologies, ideas, systems, architectures, programs, protocols, policies, and missions, with the aim of peaceful, commercial, and socio-economic development, excluding military or political applications. Traditionally, governments held a monopoly on space activities. However, the participation of the private sector now appears necessary to maintain and enhance human presence in space. The burgeoning NewSpace Economy encompasses a diverse range of activities, from the extraction and utilization of space resources like solar energy and asteroid-derived metals, to the provision of essential technologies and services such as satellite remote sensing and affordable launch systems. Commercial ventures drive innovation through communication, navigation, and even space tourism, while long-term goals focus on space habitation and development, including the establishment of private orbital stations and the advancement of research, education, and artistic programs in space.

National Space Society

The National Space Society (NSS) is an independent, non-profit, and educational organization focused on creating a spacefaring civilization. The NSS structure includes a network of local and international chapters, which serve as the foundation for the organization's activities. These chapters organize events, programs, and initiatives at the local level, contributing to the promotion of NSS goals within their communities. The NSS leadership consists of a board of directors and officers, who are responsible for setting the organization's strategy and policies. The operation of the NSS relies on the active participation and financial support of its members, who form the backbone of the organization.A significant part of NSS's activity is the publication of "Ad Astra" magazine, which provides information and analysis on the latest developments in the space sector. The goals of the NSS include promoting manned and robotic space exploration, educating and informing the public about space, and advocating for the interests of the space community.
